Hessen
Hessen is one of the German states which is situated in the western-central part of the country. Its capital is Wiesbaden. It borders on the northwest with North Rhine-Westphalia; going clockwise, next is Lower Saxony, Thuringia, Bavaria, Baden-Wurttemberg and Rhineland-Palatine. Some important rivers cross Hesse (in German, Hessen) – the Eder and Fulda in the north, the Lahn in the centre, and the Main and Rhine in the south. The territory is hilly, with several mountain ranges. There are numerous lakes, rivers, and parts of it are moorland and woodland. The area has been inhabited since the time of the German tribes, and there's evidence from the times of the Roman Empire and the Middle Ages. A lot of important transport routes cross the state. The airport in Frankfurt is one of the biggest European airports. Another attraction for tourists is the many health resorts and spa centres located here.
