North Rhine-Westphalia
North Rhine-Westphalia is the largest federal state in Germany, situated in the west. It's an important international economic centre, with well-developed modern technologies. At the same time, it has its cultural traditions. North Rhine-Westphalia is visited by nature-lovers too, because it offers the charm of its rural areas and preserved natural beauty. More than half of its territory is covered by lakes, forests, pastures and fields. Some of the most-visited places include the Siegerland, Oberbergisches Land, Sauerland, Teutoburg Forest and Lipperland, for their forested rolling hills, clearwater lakes, cosy villages and picturesque historical towns. One of the most popular cities in the region is Cologne, for its world-famous Gothic cathedral and many wonderful museums. The capital is Dusseldorf, famous for its old quarter and the beautiful Palace of Bruhl in the Baroque style.
