Saarland
Saarland has the smallest population and area of any state in Germany. It's named after the Saar River. Rhineland-Palatine surrounds it to the north and east, France borders it to the south and west, and Luxembourg is to its west, as well. The Saar River runs through its territory from the south to the northwest. During the last 200 years, the region changed nationalities eight times. The French influence there is very strong. Its territory consists of many forests, and the well-developed steel industry offers one of the biggest attractions in the region, the Volklingen Ironworks, which is on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
