Saxony-Anhalt
Saxony Anhalt (Sachsen-Anhalt) is one of the 16 German states, with its capital being Magdenburg. The region has a rich cultural heritage. The UNESCO List of World Heritage Sites includes the old town of Quedlinburg and the Bauhaus in Dessau. If you decide to follow the so-called “Ronanesque Route”, you'll see many Romanesque monasteries, churches, cathedrals, fortresses and houses, decorated with sacred ornaments and sculptures. For nature-lovers, there are some quiet landscapes. Around the rivers Saale, Unstrut and Elbe, there are a lot of forests, marshland, mountains and heath land. To keep the unique natural environment in some parts of the region, people have set up national parks. Worth visiting are the Upper Harz National Park and the Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve. They offer a unique atmosphere, with great cycling and hiking paths. Those who'd like to travel by boat can try a trip along the many rivers and canals in the area. People who love rural tourism can spend a holiday on a farm with vine-growing traditions.
