Schleswig-Holstein
Schleswig-Holstein is the northernmost German state, having the North Sea to its west and the Baltic Sea to its east. Because of the two bordering seas, its fjord-like inlets, lakes, rivers and canals allow for practicing all kinds of water sports. The sea resorts are well-developed with their mile-long sand beaches on the mainland. The North Sea islands of Sylt, Amrum and Fjohr also offer wonderful beaches with enjoyable activities. Schleswig-Holstein is relatively sparsely populated, especially along the North Sea. The inland territory is a typical rural landscape with forests, clear lakes, attractive green pastures and cosy villages and small towns. Most of the people live on the coastline of the Baltic Sea. There's also the capital, Kiel, with a population of around 240,000. History lovers should visit Lubeck, one of the best-preserved Medieval towns in Germany.
