Thuringia
Thuringia is a state situated in central Germany. The most famous feature of the region is the Thuringian Forest, which is a mountain chain in the southwest. The Werra River separates these mountains from the volcanic Rhon Mountains, which are also partly in Thuringia, Bavaria and Hesse. The area is relatively small, but there's a great variety of old castles, villages and small cities. The Wartburg near Eisenach is the most famous castle, because Walther von der Vogelweide, Wolfram von Eschenbach, Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia and Martin Luther all lived there. People interested in German culture and literature should visit the cities of Goethe, Schiller and Weimar. Another place worth visiting is Naumburg with its beautiful cathedral. The capital of the state and its biggest city, Erfurt, also deserves to be visited.
