Thessaly
Thessaly is one of the 13 Greek peripheries, located in the central part of the country, with West Macedonia and Central Macedonia to its north, Epirus to the west and Central Greece to the south. The region boasts a long and picturesque strip of coastline on the Aegean Sea. The terrain is varied and consists of spacious plains and lowlands around Trikala and Larissa, overlooked by the mountain ranges of Pindus, Ossa and Pelion. The land is fertile, making Thessaly a leading agricultural district of Greece. The region attracts visitors mainly with its unique diversity and abundance of natural phenomena, such as Mount Olympus and the impressive rocks of Meteora, the latter of which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, comprising a unique complex of monasteries perched atop vertical rocks jutting into the sky. Ancient towns, busy ports and lively seaside resorts along the coast are major attractions as well. The administrative centre Larissa is among the largest and economically significant cities in the country, featuring many old churches and historical sites, as well as countless museums, taverns, bars, nightclubs and shopping centres.
