Epirus
The periphery of Epirus lies in northwestern Greece and is surrounded by West Macedonia, Thessaly, West Greece and the Ionian Islands. The region also shares a common frontier with Albania to the north. The landscape of Epirus is varied, from narrow plains and strips of beach along the coastline to majestic peaks, as well as unique natural formations inland. Most of the land is occupied by the southernmost parts of the Dinaric Alps, a mountain ridge known for its hard accessibility, scarce vegetation and exceptionally dry climate. Wildlife, however, is rich in various species, not to be found elsewhere in Greece. A number of reserves and protected natural areas of scientific value and outstanding beauty is found in the region as well. Epirus is one of the national centres of meat and dairy production. The ancient city and capital of Epirus, Ioannina, is located on the shore of Lake Pamvotis, a major tourist attraction throughout the year which features a medieval castle and its old quarter buildings from different epochs. Ioannina is also a respected university town and centre of silver jewelry production.
