Attica
Attica, the most populous administrative division of Greece, is a periphery in the southern part of continental Greece, which comprises the region around the capital Athens, the peninsula of the same name, part of the Peloponnese Peninsula and a number of islands in the Aegean Sea. Despite its moderate size, the region is extremely mountainous, with the ranges of Kithairon, Parnitha, Aigaleo, Penteli, Hymettus and Geraneia providing beautiful vistas. Most of the area is covered with forests and extensive grasslands, and the long and indented coastline is ideal for seaside tourism, offering such attractions as cliffs, rocky promontories and endless sandy beaches. Lake Marathon is the only lake in the area. Attica is full of heritage sites, most of which have originated from Ancient Greece. The powerful Greek capital of Classical Athens was the centre of learning, the arts and philosophy, and today is a modern political, cultural and tourist centre.
