Ionian Islands
The Ionian Islands is an archipelago situated off the western shore of mainland Greece. All of the islands, with exception to Kerkyra, belong to the periphery Ionian Islands, comprising six main islands and many smaller ones, the majority of which are not inhabited. Due to its location in the Ionian Sea, rainfall on the islands is heavier than in the rest of Greece, and its flora and fauna are diverse. The large islands are considered among the best seaside holiday destinations in Greece, featuring impressive infrastructure and modern resorts, at the same time boasting tranquil ambience and idyllic beaches. The inner parts of the islands are mountainous, ideal for hikers and nature lovers. The first traces of human presence on the islands date from 1200 BC, settlements which developed into an extraordinary historical heritage, seen in archaeological sites, museums and the old quarters of towns and villages. Another well-known attraction includes the island of Ithaca, presumably the home of Homer's hero Odysseus.
