Baranya
The county of Baranya occupies the southernmost end of the country. It lies on the Croatian border and is surrounded by the domestic counties of Somogy, Tolna and Bacs-Kiskun. The terrain here is a bit more differentiated than in the rest of the administrative divisions. The north and west are occupied by rolling hills with densely forested slopes. In the Mecsek and Villany Mountains, one can find plentiful traditional villages connected with peaceful roads and easy hiking trails. The plains in the east near the river Danube are particularly famous for their mineral waters and spa resorts. In Baranya, there are great concentrations of German, Serbian and Croatian minorities, which make this the most ethnically diverse region in the country. The cultural highlights in the county are represented by the magnificent Mecseknadasd Palace and Szentegat Biedermann Palace, as well as the numerous landmarks and tourist attractions in the city of Pecs, which is the fifth-most populous city in Hungary. Its early Christian necropolis is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city will be the European Capital of Culture in 2010.
