Békés
Bekes is a county in the Hungarian Southeast. It borders Romania to the south and east, Csongrad and Jasz-Nagykun-Szolnok to the west and Hajdu-Bihar to the north. The entire area lies in the wide and almost perfectly flat Panonian Plain. This is a major transportation hub between Central, Southern and Eastern Europe and also a leading national centre of natural gas production, while areas of natural beauty untouched by humans are an extreme rarity. However, the region compensates with its rich cultural heritage. The most noteworthy site is the Gyula Castle in the town of the same name, which was the most important settlement in the country during the Middle Ages. The county seat, Bekescsaba, is a comparatively small provincial city known for its evangelical churches. It also features a wide choice of attractions, theatres and museums.
