Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén
Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen is the second-largest and secondmost populous county in Hungary. It's situated in the northeastern part of the country, on the Slovakian border. The northernmost point of the country lies within this region. On its territory, the foothills of the northern mountains gradually convert into the Great Hungarian Plain, thus forming an area of remarkable natural beauty and diversity. The river Tisza and its tributaries also contribute to the attractiveness of the landscape. Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen is notorious for its extremely cold winters and holds Hungary's record for the lowest temperature of all time. Most of the urban areas are heavily industrialized, due to the abundance of coal, but at the same time this is one of the poorest regions in the country. The main tourist attractions are the National Theatre and the old quarter of the capital, Miskolc, plus a number of imposing Medieval castles in the countryside. A unique cave known as Aggtelek is situated here, listed by UNESCO and often hosting music concerts because of the fantastic acoustics between the stalactites.
