Csongrád
The county of Csongrad lies in Southeastern Hungary and borders Serbia and Romania to the south and the counties of Bacs-Kiskun to the west, Jasz-Nagykun-Szolnok to the north and Bekes to the east. The terrain is almost perfectly flat, the biggest difference in altitude being less than 50 metres. The whole territory of the county is located within the Panonian Plain, the most fertile area in Hungary. The presence of the river Tisza makes Csongrad the most important agricultural centre in the country, famed above all for its superb paprika, onion and cereal crops. The administrative centre, Szeged, is the fourthmost populous city in Hungary and a first-class transport and economic centre with international significance. Especially attractive for tourists is the downtown area, where exquisite architectural examples originating from the Middle Ages to present day co-exist in surprising harmony. The local university is ranked as the best institution for higher education in the country.
