Somogy
Somogy is the most sparsely populated county in Hungary. Located in the remote south-west of the country, it's bordered by Croatia and the domestic counties of Zala, Veszprem, Fejer, Tolna and Baranya. The region has a predominantly rural character, with endless agricultural areas and rolling green hills, absent any significant agglomerations or industrial zones. Undoubtedly the most important venue in Somogy is the world-famous Lake Balaton, often called the Hungarian Sea. It has contributed greatly to the development of tourism and economics in the region. Picturesque towns and modern resorts with plenty of attractions line the banks of the lake. The rest of the county cannot rival Balaton in terms of attractiveness. Nevertheless, a couple of historical towns and palaces are definitely worth a visit. The only bigger settlement, Kaposvar, is the economic and cultural focal point of Somogy, and was founded ten centuries ago. It boasts some spectacular Gothic, Baroque and Romanesque architectural examples, plus a wide choice of museums.
