Tolna
Tolna is a relatively small county in the heart of Hungary. It's one of the least populous parts of the country, mainly due to extensive agricultural development. Lying on the west bank of the Danube, Tolna boasts fertile soils that explain the almost exclusively rustic character of the area. The few visitors who come to this little-known area devote their time to rural tourism in the countless farms, villages and huts. Near the small town of Paks is situated the only nuclear power plant in Hungary. There's no big city in the entire county, and even the administrative centre, Szekszard, is nothing more than a fascinating provincial town. It looks back upon ten centuries of history and enchants with its tranquillity, spectacular old centre and many museums. The ruins of an 11th-Century Benedictine monastery and the unique nature reserve of Gemenc, famed for its population of stags, are the best-known tourist attractions around the area.
