Győr-Moson-Sopron
The county of Gyor-Moson-Sopron lies in the north-western corner of Hungary, on the border with Austria and Slovakia. Despite its tiny size, the county is quite densely populated and is one of the significant regions of the country in almost every aspect. Lying on the road between Vienna and Budapest, the area is a busy international transportation hub. The area has a turbulent past, having often been the object of territorial disputes between Hungary and its neighbouring states. This is one of the districts richest in preserved aristocratic mansions and palaces, surrounded by magnificent parks and gardens. The principal city, Gyor, enchants its guests with its historical centre, teeming with striking architectural masterpieces in the Baroque style. It also hosts one of the most important car factories in Central Europe. The second biggest city, Sopron, is home to a sizable German minority, which is no surprise since it lies on the Austrian frontier. Its main appeal is in the glorious old quarter and the top-quality wines produced in the surroundings.
