Vas
The tiny county of Vas lies in Western Hungary and is the westernmost of all the counties. It borders Austria and Slovenia to the west, Zala to the south, Veszprem to the east and Gyor-Moson-Sopron to the north. The landscape is prevailingly flat, with sporadic heights in the northern part of the region. Top-quality vineyards occupy much of the territory and have brought considerable fame to Vas as a leading wine-producing area, together with the adjacent Austrian state of Burgenland. Thanks to its key geographic location, the county is a dynamic and internationally important transportation hub. It's also home to a numerous Slovenian minority, which has left its mark on the customs and culture of the region. Apart from the dozens of estates and castles in the countryside, another noteworthy tourist destination is Szombathely, the oldest city in Hungary, established around 2,000 years ago by the Romans. Today, it's a lively city with an enchanting historical centre.
