Zala
Zala is a county in the south-western part of Hungary, on the border with Croatia and Slovenia. It's surrounded by the domestic counties of Vas, Veszprem and Somogy. The county also has a narrow outlet on Lake Balaton. The region is a very pleasant destination for hiking and cycling trips, because of its beautiful, gentle and easily accessible terrain. The remains of Medieval castles, Christian temples and prominent palaces entice culture lovers who want to get acquainted with Zala's historical heritage. Spa tourism is a major sector of the tourism industry, as well. The medicinal bath in Heviz is known beyond the borders of the county, and the main town in the region, Zalaegerszeg, was an important trading town during the Middle Ages, and thriving again after long years of decline caused by its location in the isolated zone on the border between East and West during the Cold War.
