Komárom-Esztergom
Komarom-Esztergom is the smallest, but second most densely populated county in Hungary. It's situated in the north-western end of the country on the border with Slovakia. The county is surrounded by Gyor-Moson-Sopron to the west, Veszprem and Fejer to the south and Pest to the east. This is among the most mountainous regions in the country, an the undeniable gem of the area is the bend of the river Danube between the cities of Komarom and Budapest, where it sharply changes its direction from eastwards to southwards. This place, sometimes referred to as the Hungarian Wachau, is considered the most beautiful landscape in Hungary with its rocks, thick woods, romantic castles and quiet villages. The capital of the county, Tatabanya, is also its cultural and economic centre. Heavily industrialized during the Communist era, the city is renowned for the Turul Monument on its outskirts, which is the biggest bird statue in Central Europe.
