Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg
The county of Szabolcs-Szatmar-Bereg occupies the easternmost end of Hungary. It shares borders with three countries, Romania, Ukraine and Slovakia, and in addition borders the domestic counties of Hajdu-Bihar and Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen. The terrain is generally flat, but not monotonous, with plenty of forests and moors in addition to the arable land and pastures. Tisza is the main river in the region, and plays a great role in many aspects of life with its transport significance and large number of reservoirs and dams. The well-preserved Medieval churches of Nyirbator are considered hidden gems, and Nyiregyhaza is among the most important industrial and cultural centres in Eastern Hungary. This 800-year-old settlement enchants with its historical centre, built up with imposing Baroque structures and surrounded by colourful parks and gardens. A renowned magnet for tourists is the thermal lake on the outskirts of the city.
