West
The West Region is the biggest in the country in terms of territory. It borders the Border Region to the north, the Midland to the east and the Mid-West Region to the south. Its long and extremely indented coastline stretches along the western boundary of the region. The Irish West is widely regarded as one of the most varied and attractive parts of the country. Among the natural sites especially worthwhile are the largest Irish lake, Lough Corrib, the impressive Twelve Bens mountain range and Connemara National Park, famed for its fantastic scenery, ample waterfalls and diversity of flora and fauna. The whole district, and the coast in particular, is covered by a dense network of hiking trails. The Arran Islands and the Cliffs of Moher also shouldn't be missed by nature lovers. Great events like the Ballina Salmon Festival, one of the most-visited annual family fests, and a host of other local and international occasions provide the opportunity to get acquainted with Irish customs. The city of Galway is the economic and cultural centre of the area. It's remarkable for its vibrant flair, reputable university and Medieval landmarks.
