South-West
The South-West Region is one of the two biggest regions in the Republic of Ireland. It features a long coastline on the Atlantic Ocean, which is considered one of the most spectacular areas on the whole island. The wild and inaccessible terrain on the mainland and adjoining small islands off the shore are the main reasons for the significant isolation of the region from the rest of the country. The highest mountain in Ireland rises here, as well as numerous hills separated by deep valleys and gorges. The exceptional diversity and beauty of the scenery can be best experienced on one of the tourist trails crossing the countryside. The most famous one is the Ring of Kerry, which offers unmatched panoramic views. Fascinating lakes and uninhabited rocky islands round off the choice of natural sites. There are also countless cultural attractions, such as the world-renowned Blarney Castle or the UNESCO-listed Skellig Michael, a spot of indescribable beauty and even greater religious importance. The unique and excellently preserved culture in the rural areas is best seen in the local folk music and dancing. The third largest city in the country, Cork, offers interesting landmarks and ample shopping and dining opportunities.
