Mid-West
The Mid-West Region lies in the western part of the country, situated on the Atlantic Coast and bordering the West Region to the north, Midland and the South-East Region to the east and the South-West Region to the south. In geographical terms, this is one of the most varied parts of the island. Separate mountainous areas combine with vast plains and wide river valleys to form truly enchanting landscapes in the inland. The coastline is extremely indented, with wild isolated areas and massive, rugged cliffs. Generally, it's absolutely unfit for swimming and watersports, but highly valued by fans of leisure, tranquility and unspoilt nature. The deep estuary of the river Shannon is the most characteristic geological feature of the district. This area cannot be defined as urban or rural, for there are both significant agglomerations and endless countryside strewn with farms and pastures. The most important city in the Mid-West is Limerick on the river Shannon. This settlement boasts 1,200 years of history and provides plenty of tourist attractions, from preserved Medieval castles and fortifications to modern shopping centres.
