Aosta Valley
Aosta Valley is the smallest Italian region, having only one province. It is situated at the border with France and Switzerland. It is an Alpine valley which, altogether with the neighbouring valleys includes in its territory the Italian slopes of Mont Blanc and the Matterhorn. The highest peak of this mountainous region is Mont Blanc. The tourist sector of its economy is very well developed. The biggest city is Aosta. It was a Roman garrison about 2,000 years ago and is the best example of Roman city planning in the country. Visitors like visiting the castles and enjoy sampling the local cuisine. Some of the famous tourist resorts are Gressoney and Courmayeur with different kinds of tourist accommodations. Another good tourist centre is Ayas, near Mount Rosa and Pila. The region is one of the wealthiest in Italy.
