Basilicata
Basilicata, once called Lucania, is one of the smallest Italian regions. It borders Campania to the West, Apulia to the North and East and Calabria to the South. The Tyrrhenian Sea is in the southwest part of the region while the Ionian Sea is in its southeast part. Except for the Ionian strip, the territory is mountainous and hilly. Each town in the region keeps its own traditions, culture and customs. Visitors can enjoy them as well as the magnificent landscape and the local cuisine. The capital city is Potenza, destroyed several times by earthquakes during the Centuries, and is nowadays the heart of the region with its active cultural life and University.
