Emilia-Romagna
Emilia-Romagna is the recent name of the region but it comes from antiquity. As can be seen from its name, Emilia-Romagna includes two distinct areas. Its capital is Bologna. Emilia is in the western part of the region while the eastern half is Romagna. They both belonged to Constantinople and that is why remnants from the Byzantine times are seen namely in the splendid basilicas of Ravenna, a town on the Adriatic Sea. Along with the architectural masterpieces tourists can enjoy the many artistic ones, the ancient famous universities, centres of cultural and artistic learning. History and art lovers can visit the treasure museums and galleries, the churches and castles. Gourmets can sample the delicious local cuisine.
