Sardinia
Sardinia is a region of Italy, located on the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. The territory is characterised by dramatic, rolling hills, covered with spots of grass mingled with myrtle, wild thyme, dwarf oaks and prickly pears. The coast is a combination of high cliffs, mountains going straight down into the transparent sea and quiet inlets, grottos and amazing beaches covered with pink and white sand. There are a lot of caves; Sardegna (Sardinia) has more caves per square mile than anywhere. Tourists interested in visiting the ancient nuraghi ruins, unique to Sardinia are highly encouraged to do so. The name comes from the word ‘nurra’ which means “heap” or “mound” and also “cavity”. The gutted cone-shaped towers in the cities, built with stone blocks without using mortar, resemble fortresses of the Middle Ages.
