Daugavpils
Daugavpils is the southernmost district of Latvia, on the borders with Belarus and Lithuania. It's surrounded by the districts of Jecabpils, Preili and Kraslava. Large parts of the area are set below sea level, in the valley of the river Daugava. Lots of lakes and spacious lawns and parks occupy the surroundings of the principal city of the region, Daugavpils. It's the second-biggest city in the country after the capital, Riga, and attracts tourists with its long history, authentic architecture and modern cultural programme. The city is also a university centre of national importance. The only other two towns in the district are Ilukste and Subate, but their population doesn't exceed 1,500 inhabitants and tourist attractions there are scarce.
