Liepāja
The district of Liepaja occupies the south-western end of Latvia, on the border with Lithuania. In addition, it borders the domestic regions of Ventspils, Kuldiga and Saldus to the north and east. The district, and especially its capital Liepaja, are a major tourist centre with long, sandy
coastlines and a number of modern resorts offering all types of outdoor activities, nightlife and cultural programmes. The town of Liepaja itself boasts a long and dynamic history, as since its foundation in the 13th Century it has been under the rule of several countries, including the
Russian Empire, Prussia and the Soviet Union. As far as landscape is concerned, Liepaja is occupied by extensive plains, strewn with lakes, rivers and canals. It is among the leading industrial and agricultural regions in Latvia.
