Madona
Madona is one of the largest administrative units in Latvia. It lies in the central part of the country and borders eight other districts. The area is predominantly flat, but there are a couple of heights that break the monotony of the landscape. In fact, the highest point on Latvian territory is here, known as Gaizinkalns. It's only 312 metres above sea level, but is a popular tourist destination with its tower and the skiing resort in its foothills. The largest lake in the country, Lubans, is in the vicinity as well. The town of Madona, which has been constantly inhabited since the
7th Century, is the only bigger settlement and administrative centre of the district.
