Preiļi
The district of Preili is situated in the south-eastern part of the country, and borders Daugavpils and Kraslava to the south, Rezekne to the east, Madona to the north and Jekabpils to the west. There are numerous locations where peat is raised, and this is the basis of thelocal economy. The region is also famous for its biochemical and glass plants near the town of Livani. The capital of the district, Preili, is regarded as one of the oldest settlements in Latvia, being established in the beginning of the 13th Century. Until World War II, most of the town's inhabitants were Jews, who have left a remarkable heritage.
