Valka
The Valka district is situated in the north-eastern corner of Latvia, and borders Estonia, as well as the domestic districts of Valmiera, Cesis, Gulbene and Aluksne. The landscape is uniform with a mainly rural character. The best-developed town in terms of economy is Smiltene, while the main town is actually Valka. It constitutes one settlement with the Estonian town of Valga, divided by a boundary through the middle. The town originates from the 13th century and enjoyed great social and cultural importance during most of its history. Nowadays, it's a pleasant provincial town with copious parks and lush greenery in the streets. It's also a university centre.
