Alūksne
Alūksne
Aluksne is a district in the northeast of Latvia, and borders Estonia and Russia. It is surrounded from the south and west by the Latvian districts of Balvi, Gulbene and Valka. The most impressive tourist attractions in Aluksne are the picturesque sandstone formations along the banks of the rivers Gauja, Melnupe, Pededze and Vaidava. The region abounds in interesting heritage sites from different epochs, with the 18th-Century palace and churches in the town of Aluksne and the former rocket base of the Soviet army in Zeltini, or the only functioning narrow-gauge railway in the Baltic states. A visit to the one-of-a-kind Bible Museum in Aluksne, containing versions of the holy book from 1694 to present day, shouldn't be missed.
