Cantemir
The district of Cantemir is located in southwestern Moldova on the left bank of the Prut River. To
the west it borders Romania, to the north Leova, to the east Gagauzia and to the south
Cahul. The landscape is dominated by the extensive valley of the main river, Prut, and is to a
large extent flat and monotonous. Geographically, Cantemir lies in the zone of the dry steppes.
The region is also known for its excellent vineyards, from which the recognised Moldovan wine is
produced. The principal town, Cantemir, is the only significant settlement in the district. Before
World War II it was called Achendorf and was populated mainly by ethnic Germans. Nowadays, it
represents a dreary provincial town with a couple of small industrial enterprises.
