Cahul
The district of Cahul is situated in the southern-most corner of Moldova. It consists of one main
part plus one exclave between Gagauzia and Ukraine. The administrative unit borders the
domestic districts of Cantemir to the north and Gagauzia and Taraclia to the east, as well as
Romania to the west and Ukraine to the south. The landscape is predominantly flat, since the
whole region is occupied by the wide fertile valley of the Prut River. In the south, the surface
becomes even flatter with the swampy lowlands of the Black Sea coast. Namely, in this part of
the district lies its major natural attraction: the Lower Prut Nature Reserve. The administrative
centre and only town in the region is Cahul. The key geographical location of the historical
settlement has made it a venue of important battles in Moldovan, Russian and Turkish history.
Nowadays, it enchants its guests with numerous thermal spas, exquisite wines and a famous
folk music festival.
