Nisporeni
Nisporeni is one of the comparatively small Moldovan districts in the valley of the Prut River. It
shares common borders with Romania to the east, Ungheni and Calarasi to the north, Straseni
to the east and Hincesti to the south. The western part of the district is a fertile plain along the
Prut, while the east is occupied by the Codri Heights. The latter are especially rich in woodlands and
wildlife, which attracts increasing numbers of tourists and nature lovers. Here rises Mount
Balanesti, the highest point in the country with an altitude of only 430 metres above sea level. For
visitors interested in culture and religion Nisporeni offers a couple of old monasteries, such as the
Varzaresti Convent and the glamorous Hincu Monastery, erected in 1678 near the small village of
Bursuc. The administrative centre, Nisporeni, has one major point of interest - namely the local
ethnographic museum.
