Orhei
Orhei is one of the largest districts in Moldova in territorial aspect. It is situated in the eastern
part of central Moldova and borders Rezina to the north, Transnistria and Dubasari to the east,
Criuleni and Straseni to the south and Calarasi and Telenesti to the west. The district comprises
parts of the parallel valleys of the Reut and Dniester Rivers, as well as the hilly areas between them.
The whole region is dotted with vineyards and fruit orchards. Parks and gorgeous gardens are
also ample in most towns and villages. The most significant tourist attraction is the museum
complex 'Old Orhei' near Butuceni. It consists of the preserved foundations of what used to be an
impressive medieval fortification. The Curchi Monastery is another site worth a visit, as is the
Museum of Popular Art in Ivancea. The administrative centre Orhei is one of the industrial towns
that surround the capital Chisinau. It used to be known as a centre of Jewish culture up until
World War II.
