The district of Ocnita lies in the extreme north of Moldova, surrounded by Ukraine to the east and north and the domestic districts of Briceni to the west and Edinet and Donduseni to the south. On the territory of Ocnita is located the northernmost point of the country. It is also one of the main transportation hubs in this former Soviet Republic, since it lies on the busiest road between Moldova and Ukraine. Geographically, the region is quite diverse and includes part of the low Dniester Valley, as well as an extensive range of hills. The countless thermal and mineral water springs are one of the appeals of the district, although they are still not used for tourist purposes. In many villages like Birladeni, Calaraseuca and Lipnic, ancient settlements and treasures have been found. The town of Otaci on the bank of Dniester accounts as the most prosperou town in Moldova. It is also interesting with its plentiful churches and monuments. The seat of the district is in Ocnita, which was founded as a railway station only a century ago.
