Rîşcani
Riscani is one of the Moldovan districts, situated in the north-western corner of the country. To the
west the district shares a common border with Romania, while its other neighbours are the domestic
districts of Edinet and Donduseni to the north, Drochia and Singerei to the east and the city of
Balti and Glodeni to the south. The Codri Heights occupy most of Riscani's territory, offering a
large amount and variety of beautiful scenery to nature lovers. Only the westernmost parts of the
region along the Romanian frontier fall within the valley of the Prut River. Here visitors can admire
a spectacular natural formation in the vicinity of Branesti. The principal town Riscani is among the
oldest towns in the former Soviet Republic, dating back more than four centuries of history. Today it is in severe decline and has little in common with the flourishing industrial centre it used
to be only 20 years ago.
