Transnistria
Transnistria is a breakaway republic within the borders of Moldova. It is considered the largest
administrative division and borders Ukraine to the east and the Moldovan districts of Floresti,
Soldanesti, Rezina, Orhei, Dubasari, Criuleni, Anenii Noi, Causeni and Stefan Voda to the west.
The region corresponds geographically to the long and narrow strip of Moldova east of the
Dniester River, which is reflected in its name. Due to its complicated political situation the region is
virtually unknown to foreign tourists. The area features a colourful mix of ethnicities and enjoys
significant autonomy. It even has its own currency that is only recognised within the borders of this
problematic region. Transnistria is heavily industrialised, with industrial production accounting for more
than 80 per cent of the republic's GDP. Its capital is the city of Tiraspol - the second largest city
in Moldova. It lies on the banks of the Dniester River and, although founded only 200 years ago, has
established itself as the unquestionable administrative, economical and cultural centre of the area.
