North Holland
North Holland is a province in the western part of the Netherlands, most of which lies on a long peninsula between the North Sea and the Ijsselmeer. This is the leading region in the country in terms of economy, politics and culture, since the Dutch capital of Amsterdam is situated here. The city hosts most political institutions of the Netherlands, as well as numerous offices and seats of corporations from all branches. Of course, Amsterdam is known worldwide as one of the most attractive tourist destinations altogether, thanks to its unique atmosphere, picturesque setting on a huge network of canals and above all, endless entertainment day and night. The administrative centre of the province, Haarlem, lies on coastal dunes in the vicinity of Amsterdam and is famous as a centre of tulip production. Hence its nickname, "The Flower City". The city of Alkmaar is renowned for its spectacular cheese market. The countryside generally lacks tourist appeal, for the land is used entirely for cattle breeding and agriculture.
