Gelderland
Gelderland is the biggest Dutch administrative unit in terms of territory. It lies in the eastern part of the country and borders Germany to the east and the provinces of Overijssel, Flevoland, Utrecht, South Holland and North Brabant to the north, west and south, respectively. The area is prevailingly flat, except for the wooded ridge of hills called Veluwe. The latter is a favourite tourist destination for active tourism or day trips into nature. Here, the river Rhine is the main transport thoroughfare, with huge economic importance. Although not the largest city, Arnhem is the administrative and cultural centre of Gelderland. The city originates from the 9th Century and boasts many interesting heritage sites and architectural landmarks. Nijmegen is bigger and even older than its neighbour, and hosts dozens of museums and a respected university.
