Groningen
Groningen is the northernmost province in the Netherlands. It lies between Germany to the east, the North Sea to the north, Friesland to the west and Drenthe to the south. Groningen is one of the best developed economic regions of the country, due to the extremely intensive agriculture and above all, the rich natural gas field near Slochteren. The area features a long and dynamic history, during which it has been under the reign of different countries. A varied palette of historical sites and monuments from those times attracts numerous tourists. The capital of the same name is one of the larger Dutch cities, by far the largest in the North. It's a first-class university centre with students from all over the world. Not surprisingly, the cultural programme and nightlife are unmatched by any other city of this size. Especially noteworthy are some historical buildings, like the Martini Tower and City Hall, as well as a couple of churches.
