Drenthe
Drenthe is a province in the eastern part of the Netherlands, on the border with Germany. To the north, west and south, the region is surrounded by the Dutch provinces of Groningen, Friesland and Overijssel, respectively. Drenthe is the most sparsely populated area in the whole country. The landscape is entirely dominated by arable land, strewn with farms and sporadic towns. Not surprisingly, the economy of the province is focused on agriculture and tourism. Cycling tourism is extremely attractive here, due to the tranquility of the countryside, lack of big rivers and lakes and the superbly constructed and maintained network of cycling paths. Many visitors are drawn by the imposing dolmens that are scattered around and bear witness to prehistoric times. The biggest city, Emmen, and the capital of the province, Assen, are the two best developed urban areas, which provide a mixture of cultural highlights, such as the remains of the Assen Monastery and copious museums, as well as modern entertainment like shopping and nightlife.
