Lisbon Region
The Lisbon Region is situated approximately in the centre of the Portuguese Atlantic Coast. The smallest mainland region of the country consists of two parts separated by the wide estuary of the Tejo River -- the larger Lisbon area and the Setubal Peninsula. Since it contains the capital of Portugal, the region is the undeniable economic and cultural centre of the country. Furthermore, it hosts all major government institutions and a couple of internationally renowned universities. Lisbon's harbour and airport are among the busiest in Europe, because they're a starting point for many transatlantic journeys. The landmark of the city is the huge 25 de Abril Bridge, which connects both banks of the Tejo just before it flows into the ocean. The region is also known for its cosmopolitan ambience, trendy summer resorts and spectacular golf courses. The nightlife and abundance of cultural events in the capital are superb.
