Açores
The autonomous region of Azores comprises the archipelago of the same name in the Atlantic Ocean, some 1,500 kilometres from the shore of mainland Portugal. It consists of nine larger inhabited islands and a host of rocks and tiny islets. Due to its volcanic origin, the islands have a unique mountainous terrain with high, inaccessible peaks, wide valleys and deep gorges. The whole archipelago abounds in vegetation, much of which is endemic and can only be found here. Unlike most other tropical islands, the Azores aren't particularly suitable for seaside holidays because of the lack of good beaches and the heavy rainfall. However, the marvellous scenery, old colonial towns, traditional mountain farms and lively fishing villages attract more and more tourists who wish to discover the charm of this little-known part of Portugal. The main city, Ponta Delgada, is the cultural, economic and tourist heart of the region. It features impressive examples of colonial architecture and plenty of festivals and celebrations throughout the year.
