Madeira a.r.
Madeira is one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal far off the shores of mainland Europe. It encompasses the archipelago of the same name, which geographically is part of Africa, but has a more European flair than the neighbouring Azores. Madeira is a well-known holiday destination and has longer tourist traditions than any other island in the Atlantic Ocean. It's world famous as a favourite summer retreat for celebrities from around the globe. The first-class local wine and the magnificent coastline full of endless sandy beaches and posh resorts shape the image of the archipelago as a top destination. However, Madeira has a less known, but even more attractive side. Stunningly beautiful mountain ranges with verdant, green slopes in the inner part of the island, as well as tranquil fishing villages, are still untouched by mass tourism and waiting to be discovered. The region's capital is Funchal, a captivating city that combines colonial architecture with a rich choice of modern entertainment. It's famous for its fireworks show on New Year's Eve, which claims to be the biggest celebration of its kind in the world.
