Central
The Central Federal Distict is the heart of Russia in every aspect. Contrary to its name, it lies in the westernmost part of the country, bordering on the Southern and Northwestern districts, the Volga district and Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine. The area is among the smallest Russian federal districts, but is by far the most populous one. This is a result of the huge Moscow metropolitan area, one of the biggest urban zones in the world. All of the important government and educational institutions are concentrated here. It's also an economic and political centre of world significance. This modern metropolis offers its guests an incredible amount of heritage sites and monuments, old cathedrals, green parks and gardens and many cultural events. Another attractive tourist destination is the city of Vladimir, with its spectacular White Monuments, included by UNESCO in the World Heritage List. It's considered the cradle of Russia, having been a royal residence far before the birth of Moscow. In the vast countryside, there are plenty of opportunities for sports and active relaxation -- rivers, canals, green fields and forests and endless cycling routes await you!
