Far Eastern
The Far Eastern Federal District is situated in the extreme east of Russia. It's the largest among the seven districts, but in spite of its immense size, the number of its population is negligible. The district occupies the whole Far East of Russia and borders China and North Korea to the east, and the Siberian Federal District to the west. To the north lies the Arctic Ocean, while the east coast is washed by the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Almost the whole population and economic activity are focused in the big cities along the Chinese border and the Pacific Coast. The landscape is diverse, combining coastal plains, vast ice fields and majestic volcanic peaks on the Kamchatka Peninsula. The island of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands are also part of this administrative unit. The region is extremely rich in natural resources and untouched flora and fauna. The variety of cultures is also remarkable. Some of the numerous ethnic minorities are Chinese, Japanese, Jews and Chukchi, each of them with their authentic customs and way of life. The biggest cities are Vladivostok, Khabarovsk and Yakutsk, but they're predominantly industrial transport centres and offer few noteworthy tourist attractions.
